Celebrating Mexico’s Day of the Dead in Puerto Vallarta
Throughout Mexico celebration to honor Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) will take place for one week the beginning of November with festivities to memorialize a beautiful tradition of remembering those who have passed amid the celebration of life. The actual Holidays are celebrated for children are said to reunite with loved ones on November 1st and for adults on November 2nd.
It is believed the human spirit never dies, and the spirit travel between this world and the after-life.
Stammers and flags line the cobblestone streets in Puerto Vallarta and gently sway when the breeze blows or whenever a spirit passes by. Colorful larger than life skeleton statues are seen everywhere around town and the town square along the famous Malecon boardwalk comes even more alive with this cultural celebration of life.

In the town square in Puerto Vallarta seven-level altars telling the stories about lives and legacies are prepared by families as they gather together to remember their ancestors.
Each alters are vibrantly decorated with candles, colorful flowers, photographs, favorite food and drinks, sweet bread call Pan de Muerto made only for this occasion, and mementos that were meaningful to each person are placed at the altar. The items are meant to welcome the spirits and connect with familiar to help find their way home.
Families pay tribute to their loved ones who have passed amid the celebration of life by touring the town cemetery. Even more remarkable are the cemeteries themselves is the smell of incense is throughout the air. There are displays of offerings, and countless candles casting an eerie yet comforting flow on the tombs and monuments. Sharing stores and memories of those whose graves they visit are where families hold vigils and spend time together.
Colorful costumes and painting of faces with dark eyes and stitched mouths juxtaposed with flowery decorations are designs signifying life and death and worn by locals and tourists alike.
The Centro Historic district is where Dia de Los Muertos is the heart and soul in the public celebration. Sidewalks along the galleries and shops are adorned with row upon row of altars. Tributes to many famous people and cultural icons along with shrines of so many who are unknown but remembered by the community.
